When we hear the word valley, we imagine a sprawling green landscape surrounded by high mountains and snow capped peaks. What if I told you about a valley that looks like a rainbow on earth?

The Valley of Flowers that is opening on the 1st July 2021is Uttarakhand’s most popular trek. Even the people who are not trekkers or travellers are aware of it. Valley of flowers lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This trek can be ended at the Valley of flowers or you can go further up to Hemkund Sahib, one of the most popular Sikh pilgrimages at the altitude of 14,400ft.

The Valley of Flowers was founded by the Indian Government in 1980 and it was announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. This is one of the oldest treks known to people in India. Valley of flowers is a moderate trek and requires a minimum of 6 days.

The Valley of Flowers is mostly visited by travellers in the months of July-September. The beauty of the trek is that it changes every day and looks absolutely magnificent yet different every month. You can find more than 80 species of flowers in this valley which stretches for about 10 Kilometers in length and a couple of kilometers wide. It looks like a wide ocean of colours spread for infinity.

A narrow pathway is naturally carved by nature beckoning you to wander into the depths of this vast ocean of flowers. The one thing that you won’t miss is as soon as you start walking down this winding path you can feel the cool breeze coming from the other end of the valley which is covered by the snow capped mountains. The breeze brings with it a cocktail of scents that you will find nowhere else.

When you want to visit the valley the pick-up point is from Rishikesh. You have to first reach Govindghat. Govindghat is just 25 kilometers before Badrinath and is 272 Kilometers from Rishikesh and hence, is a long drive. The best way is to take a taxi.or you can take the Rishikesh-Badrinath bus for cheaper travel. The journey to Govindghat takes you through all the 5 prayags and we strongly suggest that you stop for a moment and enjoy all of these confluences.

Then once you reach Govindghat, you will have to further travel to Ghangaria. From Ghangaria the valley of flowers is a 4 kilometer trek. However, the difficulty starts when you start your journey to Hemkund Sahib, in just 6 kilometers you experience an altitude change of about 4633m.

About the stay, you will find beautiful lodges built in both Govindghat and Ghangaria. Both these places have electricity. However, the last ATM was found in Joshimath. Also, the trek also cuts you off from the world as you will find no network whatsoever.

The Valley of flowers is really as beautiful as you see in all the pictures. Do think of us when visiting. For more information connect with us.

Uttarakhand is a state that has been a place of pilgrimage for as far as one can remember. It has often also been called the “Land of the Gods.” Even though one can find unnumbered temples in the state of Uttarakhand affiliated to one god or another. Lord Shiva is one deity with the most following in this particular region.

Indian pilgrimage sites have always been known through the mystic legends that every temple brings with them. The story behind the five sites known as the Panch Kedar is also quite fascinating.

The legend has it that when the Pandavas set out in search of Lord Shiva, he took the form of a bull to avoid being found. However, when Bhim almost captured the bull, the bull vanished and was found in parts at these five sites, famously known as the Panch Kedar.

The head and hair of the bull were found in Kalpeshwar, the hump at Kedarnath, the navel at Madhyamaheshwar, the face at Rudranath, and the arms at Tungnath.  The Panch Kedar temples were built as a symbol of devotion by the Pandavas for Lord Shiva.

Honestly, the story behind the panch kedar wants you to visit these sites and see how it all weaves into this beautiful myth, story, or legend, whatever you want to call it.

Let me tell you a little bit more about the Panch Kedar, starting with one of my favorites:

Kedarnath: Kedarnath, also known as the “lord of the fields,” is the way to heaven itself. The second you step into the valley, all your tiredness magically disappears, and you know you have entered an area filled with nothing but peace, calm, and serenity. It is located at the height of 3,584 m. The trek to Kedarnath temple begins from Gaurikund and is an around 19-km uphill trek. The trek can be finished in 6-7 hours.

(Click to know how to reach Kedarnath)

Madhyamaheshwar: The site has its name as the navel that is the middle part of the bull appeared here. Madhyamaheshwar has a backdrop of a dense forest with the snow-capped Himalayas on one side and alpine meadows. The temple has a typical and straightforward architecture of north India.

(Click to know how to reach Madhyamaheshwar)

Tungnath: The Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world. It sits peacefully on the Chandranath Parvat. You can reach Tungnath after a small trek of 3.5 KM from Chopta. The trek is breathtaking, even if it’s short. You can visit Tungnath any time of the year, even alone. However, if you plan to trek in winter, you will need a guide as the trek is covered with sheets of snow.

(Click to know how to reach Tungnath)

Rudranath: Located in the peaceful Garhwal Himalayas. The 4th temple in the chain of the temples one visits for Panch Kedar lies deep in the lap of alpine meadows and the rhododendron forests. This is one of the hardest of the kedar’s to reach.

(Click to know how to reach Rudranath)

Kalpeshwar: This is the only temple in the circuit of panch-kedar that is open throughout the year. The trek to this temple goes through terrace fields and is quite awe-inspiring. Kalpvriksha tree is an ancient tree that is believed to fulfill the wishes of worshippers and travelers. (Click to know how to reach Kalpeshwar)

The Panch-Kedar are the five places which are little heaven for the worshippers of lord shiva and haven for the oil of the travelers.

The different aspects of Shiva have manifested themselves in many different forms across the country. One of these is the Temple of Kedarnath. The divine lingas are spread from Kedarnath in Uttarakhand in the extreme North to Rameshwaram in the Extreme South. A jyotilinga is said to be of divine origin, with each linga with its own unique legend of creation. If you are interested in the myths and tales of Kedarnath, Keep on reading, my friend!

The Unique Legend of Creation of Kedarnath

In the Rudrapryag district of Uttarakhandl, Kedarnath is one of the most revered pilgrimage spots in the country. It has its roots in ancient times. It is said to have been visited by the Pandavas several times. After their victory over the Kauravas at Kurukshetra, the Pandavas attempted to atone for the sin of fratricide by worshipping Lord Shiva at Kashi. He remained elusive and persistent. Shiva left Kashi to test their devotion and appeared in the guise of a bull. Bhima recognized him and tried to chase him, but Shiva dived into the earth and vanished, leaving only the hump of the bull, which is, till today, worshipped in the form of a linga. The other parts landed in different directions, the face falling at Rudranath, his belly at Madmaheshwar, his locks at Kalpeshwara and his arms at Tunganath. All these five shrines, the holiest of which is Kedarnath, are collectively known as Panch-Kedar. It is here that Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva to unite with him in the form of Ardhanarishwara. Another legend recounts how the two incarnations of Vishnu, Nar and Narayana, worshipped Shiva at Badrikashramam and pleaded with Shiva to take up a permanent abode at Kedarnath, in the form of a jyotirlinga. It is also said to be where ADR Shankaracharya was last seen before he went into the forest, never to return. (Source: The Book of Shiva, Namita Gokhle)

More about Kedarnath

Kedarnath is easily accessible from all the significant locations in Uttarakhand. To reach Kedarnath, you would have to reach Gauri Kund, which is easily accessible by road.

Once you reach the mesmerizing region known as Gauri Kund, don’t forget to take in the sights. As the name suggests, Gauri Kund is famous for its natural thermal springs. As the legend has it, this is also the place where Goddess Parvati meditated to fulfil her wish to marry Lord Shiva. There is also an ancient Gauri Devi temple here, honouring the goddess. Half Kilometre from Gauri Kund is the Temple of Sirkata (headless) Ganesha. According to the Skanda Purana, this was the place where Shiva beheaded Ganesha and then attached the head of an elephant on his headless body.

The Trek to Kedarnath is 14 KM long, but the journey is one you would wish to take again and again. Kedarnath Trek is one of the few Trek’s where the journey is equally beautiful as the destination. I might not have been here writing this article if my friends wouldn’t have brought them back with me. I absolutely fell in love with the journey to Kedarnath and plan to go again every year.

The Trek is arduous, no doubt, but I promise once you reach the Temple, it’s almost like the air around you is vibrating with the mantra, “Om Namah Shivaay “, and you feel a calmness settle over you, unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

Shiva worshippers who physically aren’t fit enough to Trek the whole way, for services like ponies, palanquins, and even helicopter services are available to support them in their yatra.

Once you reach the Temple and have settled, you can visit:

1.    Chorabari Tal, also known as Gandhi Sarovar, is a beautiful pristine lake that can be reached by undertaking a small trek of 4 KM. The journey to Chorabari Tal is quite picturesque and takes you through a cute yet dangerous waterfall.

2.    Vasuki Tal is almost 8 KM from the town of Kedarnath. The clear water of the tal reflects the moods of the sky quite indescribably.

3.    Bhairavnath Temple: This temple is a measly 500 m away from the main temple and is the most visited destination after the main temple. It is believed that Bhairava is the first Gana of Lord Shiva and the protector of Kedarnath Temple and valley especially during the time the valley is closed.

4.    Kedarnath Gufa also known as the Rudra Meditation cave has become quite the hotspot since our Prime Minister Narendra Modi meditated in the cave. It is at a distance of 1.5 KM from the Kedarnath Temple and is a a part of the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam’s Guest houses chain. It is a serene place preferred for spiritual practices. Oh! I forgot to mention that the cave is underground too.

The journey to Kedarnath introduces you to a spiritual experience that is beyond this world, this universe. You will find yourself lost in the aesthetic of the region.
